Algorithm
search engines use a complicated mathematical formula to rank the web pages. An algorithm is a set of rules used by a search engine to rank the website listings in its index. Algorithms are protected by considerable security - and search engines do not divulge how their algorithms are formulated.
Alexa Traffic Rank
Alexa is a Google service that indexes page popularity. Alexa gathers data on the website traffic by offering an optional browser toolbar for Internet users. Then it tracks web user activity anonymously. A lower Alexa Traffic Rank indicates more website traffic.
AllTheWeb
Search engine which was created by Fast, then purchased by Overture, then by Yahoo.
ALT Tag
An abbreviation for “alternative.” ALT tags are instructions included in HTML tags for defining graphic images. A “hint” text box with a description will appear when hovering the mouse over the image. Alternative text makes your Web site accessible to people with disabilities. Search engines look for keywords in the first three ALT tags on the page. ALT tags can significantly improve your search engine rankings.

Altavista
A search engine that indexes all the words in a web page. Adds new pages to its database within days. Altavista uses just the main page of your site.
Analytics
Software allowing tracking of page views, user paths, and conversion statistics based upon interpreting your log files or through including a JavaScript tracking code on your site.
Anchor
An HTML tag that marks a specific point in an HTML document being either the source or destination of a hypertext link. Anchors allow you to create links from one hypertext document to another. The <A NAME> tag specifies a place in the document. To point at the place defined by the <A NAME> tag, <A HREF> tag is used with the anchor name after ‘#’ symbol in the URL.
Anchor Text
Text you see when viewing a link (aka hyperlink) to an internal web page. They are the words you click on when you click a link. Anchor text provides information about the content of the linked page.Example: <a href="#anchorpage">This is anchor text</a>
